ExLENT Workshop Series | Fall 2025 – Bishop Museum

On October 2, we welcomed students to the STEM Center for a special workshop on Hawaiian Tree Snail and Ecosystem Conservation, presented in collaboration with the Bishop Museum’s Malacology team.

Students learned about the cultural and ecological importance of native Hawaiian snails, as well as the conservation efforts being used to protect them. The workshop also highlighted emerging technologies in conservation science, including hands-on 3D printing and portable DNA sequencing in the field.

Throughout the session, students practiced identifying Hawaiian snail species, connected with experts, and discovered how modern technology can support traditional conservation practices.

This event was the third in our ExLENT Inspire Workshop series, which brings local STEM professionals to campus to share how they use innovative technologies in their work. These workshops give students the chance to connect with professionals in Hawaiʻi, see how their STEM coursework applies to real-world careers, and explore paid opportunities in STEM.

We are proud to offer engaging workshops like this that connect culture, science, and technology. Mahalo to the Bishop Museum Malacology team and all of the students who joined us—we look forward to continuing the ExLENT Inspire Workshop series throughout the semester.
